How it Works
O'Sullivan's Farm Australia 2016
Step 1 (Biocarpet)
We use a large herd of cattle. Their sharp hooves break up the crust and mixes their dung and urine into the sand.
In the photo you'll see that the fenced off area that the cattle worked is darker brown. We call this this paste of dung, urine, and sand a biocarpet.
Step 2 (Fungi)
Now that we have a biocarpet we’ve completely protected the land from the harmful effects of the UV rays of the sun. We’ve also prevented evaporation.
This warm, dark and moist biocarpet, is the perfect medium for fungi. The fungi are essential for bringing back the life in the desert.
After the first rainfall, mushrooms appear. They are the first visual signs that the beneficial microbes and fungi are exploding with life. We are building soil.
Step 3 (Grassland)
Within a few months after rainfall: Forage as tall as 6-8 feet can cover the land. The soil infiltrates water when it rains. Land temperatures are much cooler. Particulates in the air are decreased.
